The Unlikely Gorilla
The gorilla, an animal native to Africa, appears at The Creek. Note
that care was exercised to use dark stone befitting the natural color of
the animal. Upon his head rests a lizard indicating thoughts of universal
subjects.
The Native American artisans who sculpted this work had only several
options. They had seen the animal
before. This means they would have had to have gone to Africa or
the animal would have had to have been brought to them. OR, an image of
the creature was shown to them. In any case, there is no known record of
Indian migration to Africa and logic would demand the presence of a third
party capable of traveling the distances.
